Both of the regions of the Algarve and Faro, share the same international airport based at Faro, the Faro/Algarve Airport) FAO, in central Algarve, and where, incidentally, the public university,(the University of the Algarve) is also located.
There are regular low cost, no-frills airlines, and scheduled flights from airports all over the UK, to choose from.
As with anywhere else in the world, during the quieter winter months there are normally other cheap flights to be found for the option of taking a weekend break.
Faro flights arrive several times a day all year round at Faro Airport (Aeroporto de Faro - FAO), Portugal.
Faro Airport is the only International Airport in the Algarve (Note: South Portugal, not South of the Algarve).
Referring to Portugal as a whole, there are also two other International Airports in Portugal, with Lisbon International Airport (Aeroporto de Lisboa - LIS), and Porto International Aiport (Aeroporto do Porto - OPO).
Travelling to the Algarve from Europe is easy and as mentioned above, can be very cheap with the number of airlines serving Faro, complimented by the availability of Faro flights on the Internet.
Flights to Portugal from the UK, Ireland and some other parts of Europe only take about 3 hours, so the Algarve is only a travelling distance away.
To be living further afield, from for instance America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, then flying to Portugal is still very easy to achieve, excepting that this will often involve changing planes / airlines.
So the experienced traveller more often than not, would to fly to Lisbon (central Portugal), and then transfer by car, bus or train down to south coast Algarve, thus making for a much cheaper and convenient holiday.
The location of Faro Airport (central Algarve) makes transfer time from Faro to anywhere along the South Portugal coastline less than 1 hour 30 minutes, but most of the major Algarve resorts are easily reached within the hour, and the popular central Algarve resorts like Albufeira within 30 minutes.
